There are two incompatible definitions in post-colonialism. Firstly, from a historical point of view, colonialism is seen as a historical phenomenon. By this definition, colonialism in Hong Kong refers to the era of British or alien rule until 1997. Secondly, as used by postcolonial theorists like Said, Bhabha and others, colonialism refers mainly to a Eurocentric imagination, such as Orientalism, that creates or legitimizes political division and inequality. From this point of view, it is not necessary to attribute the roots of coloniality to an existing regime of rule in order to be effective. If this is by nature a cultural imaginary, it can then be used in practice to signify any exploitative regime, not just alien rule. In Hong Kong, these two definitions of coloniality can create conflicting usages and consequences. If colonialism refers to pre-1997 rule, then in what sense is post-1997 postcolonial? However, the advent of nativist movements in the post-1997 era has invoked a different colonialism that is associated with the hegemonic rule of greater China. This is a value judgment that necessitates conceptual legitimation. What in fact is colonialism here attributable to? In this sense, how does one define postcolonial critique? This thesis will explore "nativist" social movements in post-1997 Hong Kong and attempt to understand the diversity of "postcolonial" discourse in order to assess the possibilities of cultural critique and their ramifications for subjectivity and sovereignty.

520 $a 後殖民主義主要有兩個很不同又互不相容的定義。其一、是從歷史角度出發，把殖民歷史當作現象來探討。這個是較標準和普遍的定義，大部分學者都採取這個取向，特別是指英國或日本時代的殖民統治歷史和殖民主義。其二、則是從Said和Bhabha的理論出發，完全不依賴殖民主義的存在，例如Said的東方主義其實是以文學分析來探討殖民主義的西歐主義，把殖民主義當作論述來探討，如此取向根本完全不需要歸根於當時的政治脈絡，是一種價值判斷。更重要的是，如此類型的文學想像的定義，完全跟殖民主義無關，這個亦是跟所謂標準後殖民主義毫不一樣的地方。從香港的脈絡來說，若果從上述所講的歷史角度出發，顯然是指英國殖民統治時代及其所帶來的後果，也就是指以冷戰作為背景的歷史源由，是故，才會在1997年回歸後需要和才會出現解殖的想像，而所謂的「本土」其實都暗示著從這個取向而來。然而，若果從上述所說把後殖民主義作為論述和價值判斷來看的話，則不需要殖民統治者的存在，而在當代的脈絡下，這個批評對象顯然是指「大中國」。本文並非要討論香港於九七回歸後的「本土」社會運動，而是，嘗試通過社運等事件，來展示後殖民論述的多樣性，繼而探討後殖民主義在學術上運用的可能性和貢獻，同時思考主體性與主權等問題。
