In this secular age, many pastors faced unprecedented difficulty recruiting congregates, which has led to more pastors quitting their profession due to stress. To reduce clergy burnout, some researchers found that ministers who could rely on high-quality attachments as stress-buffers were less likely to quit. Different attachment styles have also been associated with different stress-resistance among pastors. This study used survey data obtained from 209 students enrolled at a seminary school in Hong Kong and performed a secondary data analysis to investigate for potential relationships between attachment style and romantic and religious attachments. Data were collected from self-reported answers from the students who completed an online survey, which consisted of three measures (Relationship Scale Questionnaire [RSQ], Experiences in Close Relationships-Revised Scale [ECR-R], and Attachment to God Inventory [AGI]) and some demographic information. Correlation and regression analyses performed in this secondary data analysis study confirmed that attachment styles derived from the RSQ measure were significantly associated with the avoidance and anxiety scores calculated from the ECR-R and AGI measures among Hong Kong Chinese Seminary students. Students with secure or dismissing attachment styles were associated with a lower level of anxiety about romantic and religious attachments, while students with preoccupied or fearful attachment styles were associated with a higher level of anxiety about romantic and religious attachments. Students with secure or dismissing attachment styles were also more likely to have a current romantic partner and had a lower level of religious engagement. In contrast, students with preoccupied or fearful attachment styles were more likely to be single and had a higher level of religious engagement. The effects of attachment styles on important lifestyle decisions such as marriage and religion were surprising findings and could have practical implications for seminary schools.
