Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2011.
A servo-motor drive contains state information already used for control and monitoring. These signals can be used to estimate other state information without any increase in required hardware. This research focuses on the application of known state information to extract information of spatially dependent phenomena. This text contains a review of the state-of-the-art technology in analyzing spatially dependent phenomena. The limitations of these existing techniques are then discussed. The proposed methods are developed to utilize the motor drive to estimate and extract spatial information through spatial domain re-sampling of discrete time information and spatial synchronous averaging.

The methods proposed are evaluated through simulation to illustrate important developments and limitations. Two different test stands were designed for the experimental evaluation of the techniques in a laboratory setting with realistic sensors, and the results are discussed. Finally, the limitations of the proposed techniques are presented and explored with analytical, numerical, and experimental techniques.
