Eating disorders are non-visible, mental health conditions that often impact several aspects of life. Young women suffering with eating disorders not only battle the eating disorder, but they must determine if they will reveal this health condition with close individuals. This research examines how young women (ages 18-30) with eating disorders determine whether to reveal or conceal this information from those that are close to them, because they are the most inclined to have an eating disorder. An information management theory, the Disclosure Decision-Making Model (Greene, 2009) describes factors that potential disclosers may consider when contemplating a disclosure. This study recruited young women who have suffered with eating disorders. There were two phases of data collection. First, the pilot study included semi-structured interviews with seven women who have experienced eating disorders. Participants answered questions concerning which eating disorders they have experienced, to whom and how they disclosed, motivations for nondisclosure, and advice concerning how to disclose and communicate about an eating disorder. Interview results confirmed the applicability of the DD-MM in this context, and interview results did not suggest adding or modifying constructs. The second stage of data collection included participants completing online surveys. One hundred thirty-four participants were recruited via the Lamb School of Communication's online participation system. Participants completed online surveys that assessed the nature of the eating disorder and DD-MM variables. Data were analyzed using correlations and multiple linear regressions. Results indicated that reciprocity and efficacy were the main indicators of disclosure intention.
