The purpose of this capstone project is to review how advances in ransomware have facilitated advances in other areas. The idea behind ransomware is an old idea: hold something hostage until the money is paid. As the crime has evolved, so have the payment methods and just as the criminal ideas have advanced, so have the ideas by those who deal with the criminals. Both business and law enforcement have been forced to evolve with the criminals they are pitted against. Businesses must take increased action to protect themselves and law enforcement must keep up technologically with the criminals they are tracking. The constant and cyclical nature of technological evolution from criminal to non-criminal highlights the need for an evolving thought process on global power. Traditional governments are slow to act and are more reactionary in nature. The time may have come for a new type of power in the cyber realm.
