This qualitative study examined the effect the level of project management maturity a banking IT project sponsor has on project success. Project management maturity is gauged by the amount of modern project management training, knowledge and organizational skills an individual or organization has and applies to their project lifecycle experiences. The more they have and use effectively on projects the higher the modern project management maturity level. This research has unveiled the high number of project failures in the banking IT industry with respect to finishing projects on time, within budget, and within performance requirements. Over the last forty years objectivist ontology and positivist reductionist epistemology has produced knowledge of project best practices which include knowledge of processes, tools, techniques, hard competencies, and soft competencies useful for effectively managing project resources. This research produced qualitative knowledge useful to the banking IT industry weighing whether or not their project sponsors are contributors to the high rate of project failures experienced in the banking IT industry due to the lack of project management training they receive while in their position of influence.
