Procrastination is a form of avoidance that can have substantial personal and monetary cost. Procrastination is also associated with excessive anxiety. Increasing mindfulness can lower anxiety and increase persistence in a difficult task. In the present study, we used a mediation analyses using structured equation modelling to facilitate a better understanding of the relation between the five facets of mindfulness (i.e. non-reacting, non-judging, observing, describing, and acting with awareness) and procrastination, using self-reported anxiety symptoms as a mediating variable. Results from a study of 801 undergraduate students suggest that anxiety mediates the relationship between procrastination and all facets of mindfulness, except for observing. Results also indicate that greater acting with awareness may be most closely associated with lower procrastination.
