The importance of information technology (IT) and e-commerce (EC) in the field of operations management has been emphasized in recent years and, not surprisingly, several studies have focused on this issue, investigating the relationships between IT/EC and performance. However, previous studies focused on the impacts of either IT or EC separately, instead of the impacts of IT and EC jointly, upon the performance of the firm in a single stage. In this dissertation, we propose to fill this research gap empirically by investigating the impacts of IT and EC jointly upon the performance of US manufacturing and service firms with an unconventional two-stage process method. Three interrelated essays are developed to achieve the objective of this dissertation as follows.

The first essay examines the business values of IT and EC separately and jointly and their impacts on the performance of US firms. Based on the theory of production and the CES-based stochastic production frontier approaches, this firm-level study proposes to evaluate the business values of IT and EC to empirically analyze the effects of IT and EC on the performance of US firms at the firm, industry, and sector levels. Also, with the CES-based stochastic production frontier approach, this study is able to analyze the relationships of complement and substitution among traditional (non-IT) capital, traditional labor, and IT capital. Furthermore, the two-stage process is able to provide an unconventional and more comprehensive perspective, delivering more research and business insights by the discussions of efficiency change, technical progress, and productivity growth. A panel data set composed of 129 US firms from 1999 to 2009 is used for the empirical work. In the second essay, we explore the importance of IT and EC and the performance of US firms in a two-stage process based on the partial adjustment valuation approaches derived from the theory of partial adjustment. In the settings of the speeds of partial adjustment, two distinct cases are conducted and compared, namely, the case of constant speeds and the case of dynamic speeds.

In the second case, the speeds of partial adjustment are a function of microeconomic and/or macroeconomic variables. Therefore, we are able to investigate and compare the business values of IT and EC and the performance of US organizations with not only the constant but also the time-varying (dynamic) speeds empirically in the two-stage process.

Lastly, the third essay is devoted to investigating the impacts of green initiatives, IT, and EC upon the performance of US firms in the field of operations management. Incorporating the concept of sustainability, this part of study is again conducted in the two-stage process. Specifically, using the CES-based stochastic production frontier approach, we propose to empirically investigate the relationships among IT, EC, green initiatives, and firm performance. Again, the panel data set composed of 129 US firms from 1999 to 2009 is used for the empirical work. Moreover, firms in the manufacturing and the service sectors are separated and categorized for comparison.

In sum, this dissertation work intends to contribute to the operations management literature by examining the business values of IT, EC, and the performance of US firms, using a set of panel data and an unconventional two-stage process method. The first two essays focus on the issues of IT, EC, and performance under different theoretical backgrounds and by means of newly developed methodologies. In the two-stage process, we not only contribute to the existing knowledge in the field of IT/EC studies in operations management, but also compare the empirical results obtained from different research models; consequently, we provide important managerial implications. The third essay intends to extend and bridge the relationships between sustainability and operations management in the two-stage process similar to Essay 1 and Essay 2. In other words, this essay expects to depict the relationship between green initiatives and IT/EC adoptions with the two-stage process method, and deliver essential insights to green management in the discipline of operations management (OM).

The three essays in this dissertation work are expected to significantly contribute to the OM literature by providing empirical evidences for the following issues: (1) the business values of IT and EC and their impacts on firm performance; (2) the complement and substitution among non-traditional IT input and other traditional inputs; and (3) the relationships among IT, EC, and green initiatives, especially the impacts of IT, EC, and green initiatives on firm performance.
