This dissertation examined heterosexual females' implicit attraction to male contemptuous, prideful, and neutral facial expressions, and assessed the moderating impact of attachment style. Participants included 252 adult women between the ages of 18 and 35 (M= 28.37, SD = 4.44) who were randomly assigned to one of three facial expression conditions ("contempt", "pride" or "neutral"). Each respondent was subliminally primed (30ms) with one facial expression followed by a supraliminal, static neutral face in a backward masking of the prime. Participants self-reported attraction level to the supraliminal face. Results confirm prior evidence that subliminal facial affective priming has a significant impact on subsequent evaluations of a neutral mask. Means for the three attraction outcome variables indicated that the pride condition was significantly more desirable than contempt for all outcome variables -- regardless of target model. Attachment anxiety and long-term preference were moderately correlated only in the neutral condition. Higher attachment avoidance was associated with the forced choice of a conceited, versus self-confident, romantic partner. Finally, in examining results combining the first study (Stone, Josephs, & Gorman, 2015) and this dissertation, there was evidence that attraction to faces privileges morphology over expression.
