The purpose of the study was to gather meaningful clinical information and expand research on the sport of female bodybuilding. This study used quantitative methods and collected data from female competitive bodybuilders and a normative sample of women using a short online survey utilizing four self-report psychological measures: the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire- Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), the Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI-16), and a demographic questionnaire.

The study investigated whether female competitive bodybuilders differ from a normative sample of women on eating attitudes and behaviors, evaluation of body appearance, and personality traits. Through snowball sampling and an online survey, the researchers collected 133 surveys. Two out of the twelve hypotheses were found significant, suggesting that bodybuilders experience more control and restriction around food and were significantly more satisfied with their appearance in comparison to the normative sample. However, it appears that bodybuilders do not differ from a normative sample across all domains, which previous research has indicated. The study also suggested that income and education have a significant relationship with body satisfaction and self-perceived weight and that ethnicity appears to impact control with food and overall emotional stability. Based on our findings, there may be a change in the way athletes are treating their bodies, as this study found women to be healthier than previous research suggested. It is hoped that the results of this research will increase the clinical understanding of this understudied population.
