Political realism has from time to time been an influential political theory in Western history, and the past few decades have witnessed a significant revival of this theory. Han Feizi was an ancient Chinese philosopher whose thought has had an enormous impact on Chinese political practices. I argue that despite their radical differences in time and space, Han Feizi's philosophy and contemporary political realism share key similarities, which make the comparison between them legitimate. For instance, both traditions understand the nature of politics similarly, and both argue that politics should not be seen as applied ethics. While there is no existing scholarship that seeks to study them together, the main purpose of my dissertation is to put them in critical conversation. I argue that this project is worth pursuing mainly for the reason that it is beneficial for both the study of Han Feizi and contemporary political realism. With the lens of political realism, we obtain a new perspective for interpreting Han Feizi's philosophy and realize that it is still relevant to our contemporary issues. Conversely, by drawing on his philosophy, contemporary political realism obtains insightful lessons for developing its own realistic positive program.
