This study examined Generation X (1965-1984) employees' protection motivations related to mobile device security when participating in employers' bring your own device (BYOD) programs. Constant technical innovation has led to powerful mobile devices, and BYOD policies have become increasingly popular because of their many benefits. However, BYOD policies pose a significant risk to organizational data security when employees do not comply with organizational security policies. This study investigated an overarching research question: To what extent do security protection motivation factors predict Generation X employees' compliance with organizational BYOD security policies? Security protection motivation factors included perceived security vulnerability, perceived security severity, self-efficacy, response efficacy, and perceived cost. The study used a nonexperimental, explanatory, quantitative research design to test the extent of the relationships between the security protection motivation factors and the dependent variable motivation to comply with organizational BYOD security policies. The study's target population focused on Generation X employees because previous research indicated that generational differences could influence security policy compliance behaviors. The researcher used random sampling methods to select N = 148 participants from SurveyMonkey's member database. The study's hypotheses were tested using univariate and multivariate regression models. The findings indicated that self-efficacy and response efficacy were the only independent variables significantly related to the motivation to comply with BYOD security policies. Based on the findings, the protection motivation factors most important to Generation X employees address employees' abilities to address potential security risks. Organizations concerned about security policy compliance among Generation X employees should focus on training and reinforcement measures that focus on security skills.
