Software development is one of the highest costs of doing business for large enterprises. Waterfall or stage-gated software development methodology was most common prior to 2005. Agile Software Development methods have become the de facto standard since 2005. Initially designed for small project teams in collocated workspaces, Agile Software Development methods have been adopted by large companies; however, which attributes of Agile are critical success factors and which are less important is not common knowledge. The current quantitative correlational study determined which critical success factors are most strongly related to Agile Software Development project success by executing a multiple regression using critical success factors comprised of combinations of attributes organized around organizational, people, process, technical, and project dimensions. Twelve critical success factors identified in the literature were distilled into six pairs of critical success factors combined into six matching independent variables. Four critical success factors were found to have a weak to moderate significant positive relationship to project success. One critical success factor was found to have a moderate, statistically significant negative relationship with Agile Software Development project success. One critical success factor was found to have no significant relationship to project success. The top three critical success factors are high project team capability, Agile software engineering techniques, and strong management commitment.
