The purpose of the current study was to examine the potential impact an exoneree's race and reason for wrongful conviction might have on the public's perception of the exoneree. This study gathered quantitative data from self-report questionnaires after participants were randomly assigned an experimentally manipulated vignette. We hypothesized that participants would rate perceived dangerousness, blameworthiness, and desired social distance differently for exonerees who falsely confessed versus those who had been falsely identified by an eyewitness as well as for Black exonerees versus White exonerees. We further hypothesized that Black exonerees who falsely confessed would be rated differently than all other conditions. A total of 182 participants were included in our analyses. Our results supported our hypotheses that participants would rate exonerees differently based on the type of evidence, but our hypotheses regarding the impact of race on participant ratings were not supported. Exonerees who falsely confessed were perceived as more dangerous and blameworthy and elicited more desire for social distance compared to those convicted in relation to mistaken eyewitness testimony. Our results suggest that some exonerees may experiencing stigma after release and future studies should continue exploring the factors that impact this stigmatization.
