Accounting is a growing employment sector and is facing workforce shortages. Given the rapidly changing business environments, employers are requiring a wider range of employability skills beyond those of a technical nature. This quantitative cross-sectional study examines perceptions of the most important employability skills for accountants entering the workforce and student competencies in those skills from the perspective of two roles, accounting employers and university faculty. Further, student competencies are compared to skill importance from the perspective of the two roles. Ethics was rated as the most important employability skill by each role, followed by Work Ethic, Analytical Thinking, Critical Thinking, and Communication. Both roles included Technology, Ethics, and Teamwork as the most competent employability skills in their top five skills. The comparisons revealed the largest gap in competency as it relates to importance by role were for the employability skills of Analytical Thinking, Communication, Critical Thinking, Ethics, and Work Ethic. Recommendations for employers include starting active collaborations with university accounting programs and offering internships. Recommendations for university accounting programs include embedding employability skills in curricula, increasing discussion around career options in the accounting industry and encouraging internships for students to gain practical accounting experience.
