This thesis examines the language shift that ha$ occurred among the Maori people of New Zealand. The displacement of the Maori language by English is described in terms of current theories of language loss involving factors such as bilingualism and diglossia; stable and unstable bilingualism; and domain separation and fusion. The ef fee ts on Maori society and culture of contact with Europeans and the later colonization of New Zealand are then described to provide a historical framework necessary for a study of language srdft. The main body of the thesis identifies those factors that have influenced the language shift from the habitual use cf Maori to that of English. These include education policies on the use of Maori and/or English in school; attitudes of the Maori community to those policies; the prestige or status attached to the English and Maori languages; the effects of urbanization; and the impact of modern transport and communications. Conclusions reached are that each of these factors has influenced the language choice of the Maori people in New Zealand, creating a situation in which the indigenous language now faces the possibility of extinction. Education policies and the relative statuses of the Maori and English languages contributed to a change of attitude towards Maori, which came to be seen as less useful. or prestigious than English and caused a partial shift to occur. However it is increased contact with the English language that has had the most dramatic effect on the shift from Maori to English. Urbanization policies which brought large numbers of Maori people into English speaking communities, and modern systems of transport and communications which have taken English into homes where Maori would previously have been used exclusively, created a situation of unstable bilingualism with both English and Maori being used interchangeably within the home. This domain-fusion, occurring when one language was a dominant one and the other a minority ind:f.genous language, has meant that what was previously a partial shift has moved along the continuum. until a total shift seems imminent unless steps are taken to avert it.
