This study examined the influence of Information Technology (IT) project manager (PM) competencies on IT project success. A literature review revealed a gap in the research on the collective influence of ITPM hard competencies and soft competencies on IT project success. The research question was, "To what extent do ITPM hard and soft competencies influence project success?" Sub-questions investigated the hard competencies and soft competencies influence, individually. The sub-questions were, "To what extent do ITPM hard competencies influence IT project success?" and "To what extent do ITPM soft competencies influence IT project success?" A quantitative, non-experimental, correlational design was implemented. The correlational model effectively explains the relationship between competencies and project success. The research design was built on the Critical Success Factor (CSF) theory, which explains that organizations and projects possess a set of factors that must be held constant for success. The study population comprised ITPMs with 2-5 years of experience managing IT projects in the United States. Data was collected from 107 ITPMs. Linear regression and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. The data analysis confirmed the influence of ITPM hard and soft competencies on project success. Individually, hard competencies and soft competencies were observed to influence IT project success. Findings from the study indicated that ITPMs deploying a combination of hard and soft competencies would likely possess project management knowledge, establish trust, communicate well, and exhibit openness and compassion.
