The purpose of this study was to examine outpatient physical therapy interventions for balance deficits and their outcomes, including perceptions, in community-dwelling older adults age 65 and older. Potential participants (n = 70) were identified from medical charts in an outpatient clinic in Austin, Texas. Objective data about the interventions and balance performance pre- and post-intervention were retrospectively recorded. Then a prospective survey of participants' perceptions of their balance abilities and satisfaction was sent. The survey had a 46% return rate (n=32). Chi-square revealed that there were differences in the intervention activities over time. One-tailed t-test indicated an improvement of the balance scores post intervention. (p = 0.0001). Survey results indicated decreased fear of falling post balance program but no change in the number of falls. The program was judged successful since participants reported improved quality of life with improvement in mobility and performance of activities of daily living post intervention.
