This work further explores the relationship between candidate skin tone and workplace selection decisions through the lens of an affirmative action prime. Differences in selection decisions based on candidate skin tone (Light or Dark) and exposure to diversity management practices (affirmative action or non-affirmative action statements) were explored amongst 429 Amazon M-Turk participants. Results showed mean differences in competency ratings, with the Dark candidate obtaining higher ratings in the non-affirmative action condition than the Light candidate. Furthermore, the perceived diversity of the candidate predicted evaluators' competency and hiring ratings for the Dark candidate in the affirmative action condition and for the Light candidate in the non-affirmative action condition. Implications of these findings are discussed.
