The remote gig economy refers to a collection of online labor marketplaces that facilitate short-term employment. These online platforms allow individuals, at least theoretically, to make money whenever, wherever, and however they want. This promise of accessibility and flexibility makes these opportunities appealing in a variety of situations. However, pursuing short-term employment in the gig economy entails substantial drawbacks and risk. Part of this risk is inherent in task- and project-based work, while the other part arises from gig platforms' intermediation. Nonetheless, enthusiasm for the gig economy as a novel way of organizing employment is widespread. This dissertation seeks to capture and explain differences in whether and how people pursue remote work opportunities on gig platforms.In this dissertation, I complicate the popular notion that remote gig work is a readily accessible form of employment. To do so, I first synthesize strands of scholarship that highlight different sources of unequal outcomes in the gig economy. Subsequently, drawing on the digital inequality framework, I examine participation in remote gig work among U.S. adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. I find that engagement in such work falls along existing lines of inequality; people who are more privileged along various dimensions of sociodemographic background are more likely to pursue gig work than others. I highlight that lacking digital skills constitutes a barrier to adopting gig work and navigating the precarity associated with this form of employment. Building on this finding, I consider a broad set of strategies that remote gig workers develop to mitigate the drawbacks of their work. I show that such unpaid labor is endemic to remote gig work.By exposing the barriers to and considerable costs incurred through participation on remote gig platforms, I debunk the ideal of remote gig work as an easy way of making money whenever, wherever, and however one wants. In so doing, this dissertation uncovers ways in which gig work and gig platforms in their current state fail employment-seeking individuals. I end by discussing implications of the research and offering both potential directions for future studies and a reimagining of gig work.
