Corrective emotional experiences (CEEs) are new endings to old stories. They are emotionally charged and unexpected outcomes to long-established patterns in individual narratives. Ideally, they provoke a new way of thinking and lead to positive change in those who experience them. CEEs have at times been derided, debated, and prohibited, but recur persistently and widely throughout the psychological literature, and are now recognized as primary mechanisms of change by almost all therapeutic modalities (Castonguay et al., 2012). Despite this universality (or because of it) CEEs have proven difficult to define and operationalize for scientific study. The goal of this present study is to equip clinicians with transtheoretical techniques to facilitate and process CEEs with their clients while maintaining the structure and discipline of their current modality of choice. It will examine historical attempts to define corrective experiences from Kierkegaard to the present; question why and when they are useful in psychotherapy; and suggest evidence-based techniques to increase their frequency and efficacy. This will be accomplished through a thorough review of quantitative and qualitative literature from diverse schools of thought regarding the history, function, and application of CEEs.
