The Republic of India has sought to develop robust cooperation with the United States to balance China's increasing geopolitical influence in the Indian Ocean. It signed a Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement with the United States for access to the Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia (NSFDG), despite its support to the Republic of Mauritius, which claims the Chagos Archipelago as its sovereign territory. In this paper, the author contends that the increasing competition for influence in the Indo-Pacific Region influences India to establish strategic partnerships with Western democracies. The author will attempt to shed light on India's policy over the Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia (NSFDG) and its significance to its national security objectives. The main focus will be on India seeking to emphasize its pre-eminence in the Indian Ocean by bandwagoning with the Western powers with similar strategic concerns while simultaneously externally balancing China's growing strategic influence over the littoral states in the Indian Ocean. Using India as an example, the author seeks to answer how states prioritize their political and strategic goals when faced with challenges to their national interests.
