OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the effects of cognitive-motor dual task training on functional mobility and cognition in patients with Alzheimer's Disease and expands current literature on which interventions may be beneficial to integrate into the clinical setting pertaining to this population.METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive search was performed using the electronic databases Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Fresno State Library from November 2022 - October 2023. PEDro scores were used to assess internal validity. Outcome measures included the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and the Clock Drawing Test (CDT). Pre-to-posttest control and intervention mean differences of the TUG and CDT scores were used to create a forest plot using a random effects model to represent data.RESULTS: A total of 6 studies with 194 participants were identified. The results of the primary analysis of the CDT outcome measure demonstrated statistical significance; CDT scores favored the intervention group with a large effect size of Hedges' g = 0.84 (P=0.000) and a homogenous effect of Q = 0.39 and I2 = 0.00% (pQ= 0.822). The results of the primary analysis of the TUG outcome measure did not demonstrate statistical significance, as the effect size of the Hedges' g = -1.16 (P=0.012) crossed the vertical line of null effect with large heterogeneity of Q = 13.39 and I2 = 77.60% (pQ = 0.004). Sub-analysis of the TUG also did not demonstrate statistical significance as the effect size of Hedges' g = -0.78 (P=0.012) crossed the vertical line of null effect with moderate heterogeneity of Q = 3.33 and I2 = 39.96% (pQ = 0.189).CONCLUSION: Cognitive-motor dual task training is valuable in improving cognition in patients with Alzheimer's Disease, and 3X a week on non consecutive days for 3-4 months while progressively increasing in intensity can potentially improve cognition in patients with Alzheimer's Disease.
