This dissertation explores emerging blockchain enabled forms of decentralized organizing. Blockchain has the potential to enable unique decentralized settings for organizing, but also requires distributed governance to sustain. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to contribute to a better understanding of the governance structures that exist in blockchain. This will not only contribute to theoretical discussions on distributed governance and organizational structure, but also be of great practical importance for emerging blockchain systems.The first paper focuses on exploring power dynamics in the governance of blockchain systems. This paper reconceptualizes Clegg's circuits of power in a blockchain context while incorporating the unique forking option and technological backdrop found in decentralized systems. This offers insights into the blockchain evolution process by developing a process model of blockchain evolution. This is supported using two cases focused on Bitcoin and Ethereum to illustrate the power dynamics detailed in the circuits of power model and how they relate to the process of blockchain evolution. This contributes to the blockchain governance literature by offering a novel approach to exploring important power dynamics in decentralized systems.The second paper focuses on governance arrangements in permissioned blockchain systems to examine how blockchain enables cooperative forms of organizing. This paper engages expert practitioners to help understand and articulate the core benefits and challenges that these governance arrangements present. These findings are used to conceptualize neo-cooperatives as a blockchain enabled form of organizing that can facilitate shared value creation and value capture. Findings are particularly relevant to practitioners, but also contribute to literature on blockchain governance.The third paper focuses on governance arrangements in both permissionless and permissioned blockchains and explores the different requirements and safety implications of these governance arrangements. This paper develops a framework of safety in blockchain governance that conceptualizes governance-by-the-code, governance-of-the-code, and governance-of-the-initiative as three key levels of governance that exist across both the design and use of blockchain systems. This framework is applied to Ethereum and the Spunta Banca Blockchain as permissionless and permissioned examples respectively. This provides a framework for examining how governance arrangements in blockchain have been constructed to ensure safety.
