The platform economy, an economic system that relies on digital platforms to mediate the exchange of goods, services, and information-such as Uber, Amazon, and Upwork-has profoundly impacted global economies. In China, platform companies have also achieved immense popularity and success. Well-known platform companies like Alibaba, Tencent, DiDi Chuxing, and Meituan have significantly transformed traditional market structure, employment relations, consumption patterns, and the daily lives of Chinese citizens.While the platform economy is a global phenomenon, most research focuses on developed, democratic economies, highlighting its disruption to stable employment relations and established laws and regulations. There needs to be more understanding of the platform economy in developing, nondemocratic countries, where informal practices and social networks dominate and market institutions are subject to top-down changes.Drawing upon the in-depth case study on the Chinese freight transportation sector, this dissertation addresses three key questions: First, in a state-led developmental regime, how does the market create and integrate this new type of economic organization? Second, in an emerging market dominated by informal and network-based practices, how do digital platforms reorganize the market? Third, what are the impacts of platforms on the welfare of market participants?Chapter I explores state-market relations during the emergence of the platform economy in China. It offers an alternative perspective to the current focus on the disruptive roles of digital platforms by examining the co-evolution of the digital economy and digital governance. This article examines how the platform model simultaneously solves state governance problems and enhances corporate power. It highlights three crucial features of co-evolution-convergence, reciprocity, and entrepreneurial agency-and illustrates how both the state and the corporation bolster their infrastructural power through co-evolution. This study enriches our understanding of the role of the state in digitalization. It also underscores the need for further exploration into how platforms reshape market institutions and their broader socio-economic implications. Chapter II investigates digital platforms' impacts on platform workers' experiences and welfare through a large dataset of online discussions of truck drivers. Different from the focus on employment status and algorithmic management in the current platform work literature, this research shifts the spotlight to significant economic insecurities faced by Chinese truck drivers using digital platforms. This work contributes to the existing literature by examining workers' real-time, spontaneous voices surrounding digital platforms. This essay also makes a significant methodological contribution to computational social sciences. I used a state-of-the-art large language model (LLM), GPT-4 from OpenAI, and created a novel framework, Sequential Abstraction, to analyze the topics of concern expressed by truck drivers through online discussions. Therefore, this study also provides one of the first empirical studies that examines the potential of LLMs in facilitating descriptive and explanatory social science research. Building upon Chapter II, Chapter III explains truck drivers' concern over economic insecurities using digital platforms. It addresses how digital platforms re-organize the market where informal and network-based practices dominate market activities. This study demonstrates that digital platforms disrupted the relational infrastructure of the original market by dismantling embedded ties and fostering arm's-length ties. Such relational change has increased market efficiency but harmed workers' well-being primarily through two mechanisms: 1) increased connectivity and anonymity, leading to intensified competition and dropped income for truck drivers; 2) the replacement of collaborative problem-solving arrangements with biased platform mediation, contributing to heightened uncertainties for truck drivers. By emphasizing the critical role of social relations in safeguarding the interests of vulnerable market participants, this article calls for attention to the changing relational dynamics of the platform economy and their implications on social justice.
