This study focuses on two main areas of supply chain effectiveness: inventory productivity for operational efficiency and research and development (R&D) expenditures for innovative products and process design in the automotive industry. These areas are key to agility in market responsiveness in a very dynamic environment. A two-step cross-sectional asset pricing model was developed employing Fama French regressions (Fama & French, 1992) to understand if inventory productivity increases profitability, if R&D investments increase profitability, and if profitability leads to increases in shareholder value in terms of Tobin's Q and abnormal stock returns. These areas are key to raising capital for operational agility and R&D investments. The results indicate that the combination of inventory productivity and R&D investments yields a strong positive relationship with profitability, which in turn increases stock returns. This study shows potential for raising much needed capital in an industry facing many challenges. However, due to the small sample size, further investigation is needed.
