This pilot study investigated shifts in positive and negative affect, depressed mood, and purpose in life for individuals who engaged in theta frequency-infused binaural beats meditation soundtracks. Participants were not prescreened for depression, purpose, or affect. The study utilized Beck's Depression Inventory and Purpose in Life assessments before and after a 35-day meditation protocol. The Positive and Negative Affects Schedule was administered weekly to track subjective feelings and emotions. Stratified random group assignment determined placement. Both groups received the same meditation soundtracks, but the treatment group's soundtracks were infused with theta frequency binaural beats. Both groups committed to at least four sessions weekly over 5 weeks. The results strongly supported the hypothesis for depressed mood and purpose in life. The treatment group exhibited a significantly steeper decrease in BDI scores (p < 0.01), indicating a notable improvement in their depressed mood and a moderately increased sense of purpose (p < 0.05). A method triangulation of the qualitative and quantitative data converged to reveal a deeper understanding of the resulting data. This finding suggests that the inclusion of theta binaural beats in the meditation soundtracks positively impacted particular aspects of the participant's psychological well-being. This study sheds light on the effects of binaural-beats-infused meditations on specific psychological factors and paves the way for further exploration and understanding of this evolving phenomenon.
