Zhang Xueliang, the Chinese-Manchurian "Young Marshal," was born in 1901. This was a man who was once addicted to opium but overcame it; who sympathized with fascism, but, when it reared its head in China, tried to crush it - even though it meant collaborating with the Communists; a man who admired and coveted many women, yet would submit to only one - the beautiful and charismatic wife of his commander and rival. A prisoner in his own land for decades, Zhangwas exiled to the United States when he was in his 90s and, at over 100 years old and long-converted to Christianity, died and was buried in Hawaii. He left an indelible mark on the history of modern China, but few know his story. Unlocking the mystery of this man's life, Aron Shai provides insights into China in the twentieth century and beyond. .
