Cyber crime is never at a standstill, almost quarterly, security intelligence teams and vendors issue reports on the latest cyber threats. By examining those reports, one recognizes the evolution of cyber crime. Granted, traditional techniques (such as machine compromises) are still in play but the methods of how they are applied and to what goal they are employed are changing and evolving. More specifically, legitimate services (compromised, abused or complicit) are increasingly gaining popularity in the cyber crime ecosystem.

In this dissertation we propose novel techniques for a deeper understanding of some of the roles legitimate services currently play in the cyber crime ecosystem. Firstly, we report the first systematic study on the "dark side" of domain parking based upon a novel infiltration analysis on domains hosted by major parking services.

Next, we present the first systematic study on the use of legitimate service providers in the BulletProof hosting infrastructure through reseller programs by designing a detection system to identify BPH sub-allocations in legitimate service providers.

Lastly, we study the strategic compromise of websites, watering holes, with the goal of targeting certain audiences for compromise by a carefully designed methodology, which repeatedly monitors a large number potential watering hole targets to detect unusual changes that could be indicative of strategic compromises.
