This qualitative research was a case study about the perceptions of English language teachers on educating English Language Learners (ELLs) in monolingual English-only schools. The problem was that ELLs receiving English-only instruction in a monolingual setting are at risk for poor academic success because of their English language deficits. The purpose of this research was to explore the instructional practices for ELLs in English-only monolingual settings, as perceived by ELL teachers. By exploring the viewpoints of teachers and their instructional practices, suggestions for instructional modifications to better assist ELLs were discovered and challenges teachers experience were discussed. Participants were fourth grade classroom teachers with ELL students and that teach in English-only monolingual public schools within New York State.
