Selecting the appropriate software development methodology for a project can be a very difficult decision and making the wrong choice can significantly undermine the project's success. The current literature includes details on project risk and success factors for each methodology and attempts to clarify in what scenarios one methodology is superior to another. However, the gap identified in the literature is the lack of a simple model to capture and quantify these factors and a mathematical model to calculate the best fit methodology. This paper offers a new solution model that includes the most important factors identified in the literature and inserts them into a widely used mathematical model. The model output is a suggested methodology that can be used for pre-project methodology selection, retrospective project analysis, and project portfolio review. It is hoped that this study will help organizations and project managers by simplifying the methodology selection process and help identify future improvement opportunities for their teams.
