In this dissertation, I examine the impact of the horror experience on the subjective structure of those who engage with horror as art, i.e. the horror-fan subculture. Current literature in social and personality psychology argue that the attraction to this genre is due to ideas such as sensation-seeking personality types, a socially acceptable place to identify as an aggressor, or a place to act out traditional gender roles. Such literature is shown to be unrepresentative of the lived experience, and is often alienating, and at times, pathologizing in regards to members of this subculture. This study's approach begins by taking the dominant narratives surrounding horror in social psychology and critiquing those ideas using interdisciplinary concepts from philosophy and cultural studies. Utilizing the ideas and personality theories of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and others, this work argues for alternative theories that can be utilized to explore and explain the horror experience. Four themes are highlighted as being particularly salient: Imagery, Existential Anxiety, Identification, and Existential Growth & Transcendence.

The presence of these themes is then empirically investigated using a theory-driven thematic analysis on a data pool of over 100 horror-fans and their responses to what attracts them to the genre. This was done in order to confirm or question the veracity of these themes as being present in the dialogues of the horror community at large. All four hypothesized themes were found to be present along with others. The implications of these finding and future directions of research are discussed.
