One hundred and thirty-one Chinese-American adults from three evangelical Protestant churches were asked to rank themselves as to their cultural identity, which was used to determine whether subjects identified more or less with the traditional Chinese culture. An attribution questionnaire was used to ascertain beliefs about the causes of a person's disturbed behavior. Subjects were specifically asked to rate the likelihood of emotional disturbance and demonic activity as possible causes, as well as to Levenson's scales measuring generalized expectancy for locus of control.

A two factor analysis of variance design measuring cultural identity with repeated measures on the second factor, type of attribution, was utilized. Results indicated no significant differences between the two groups self-rated on cultural identity in regard to type of attribution. Both were likely to attribute causality to emotional disturbance as well as demonic influence. Regardless of cultural identity, subjects scored high on the Internal Scale for locus of control expectancy and low on the Powerful Others and Chance Scales. Results were interpreted in light of modal descriptions about the sample.
