This study of 181 parents and 129 adult children of Chinese immigrants from Taiwan in Chicago and Los Angeles attempts to gain an understanding of the nature of hsiao or filial piety in the United States context. A series of vignettes were administered to confront respondents with a variety of dilemmas involving filial piety. The responses of parents and adult children to the dilemmas, set in Taiwan and the United States contexts, were analyzed. The findings suggest that there is basic continuity in the value of hsiao, but also a significant shift among various elements of the value to those compatible with the United States society.
