Community college business incubators provide valuable resources to a community's economic and psychological well-being. The International Business Innovation Association reported start-up companies that incubate have a five-year survival rate of 87% as opposed to the 44% rate of a non-incubated start up. Little research has been conducted to investigate best practices for community college business incubators. The Stewardship Theory of Management, which focuses on the individual rather than the agency, was reported to be appropriate for the community college business incubator. This study examined the Big Five personality traits of current community college business incubator directors using the BFI-S inventory, a 15- statement assessment tool. Results revealed community college business incubator directors possess stronger agreeableness and openness traits than the general population of middle-aged people. The researcher interviewed eight community college business incubator directors located in the southern United States to assess the relationship between their agreeableness and openness traits and their use of the Stewardship Theory of Management. Analysis revealed frequent statements indicating a preference for agreeableness and openness in their interactions with entrepreneurs in their incubators. The eight directors indicated that they implemented the Stewardship Theory of Management style more frequently than the Agency Theory of Management style. Results of this study may provide relevant data for hiring committees to determine which applicants possess the traits to become strong community college business incubator leaders.
