Research indicates that social emotional learning (SEL) is an important aspect of child mental health development that should be embedded and sustained in pedagogy and curriculum instruction in schools and extended education programs. There is a strong link between academic performance and social-emotional skills (Buchanan, Gueldner, Tran, & Merrell, 2009; Durlak, Weissberg, Dymnicki, Taylor, & Schellinger, 2011; Kress & Elias, 2013). Student behavior is an important aspect of academic success and the overall atmosphere of the classroom, since relationships and emotional processes affect how and what is learned (Durlak, et al.). Research reveals that thirty percent of students engage in high-risk behaviors, such as: substance abuse, sex, violence, depression, and attempted suicide (Durlak, et al.).

This qualitative case study examined three PreK teacher's perceptions of SEL practices and key factors associated directly working with PreK youth in large urban communities in South Los Angeles. This descriptive case study supports the need for schools that employ SEL as a framework to facilitate opportunities for student growth and development, and teacher/staff support of critical skills to achieve success. The SEAL-I conceptual framework was employed as an approach that takes into account a student's quality level of cultural-historical background, SES, relationships, and education. The case study yielded four themes that emerged; 1) Learning through Play (LTP), 2) Creativity and Imagination, 3) Relationships and Communication, and 4) Social and Emotional Support. The overall findings support that an individuals' process in learning and development are directly impacted by the variables within their environment.
