Physical educators and youth coaches can provide quality instructional strategies to enhance child fitness performance with specific attentional cues. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental research was to compare the relative change in performance between groups receiving instruction using internal attentional cueing, external attentional cueing, or no attentional cueing with seventh grade students in physical education classes at a Southwest junior high school. The constrained action hypothesis was the theoretical framework used to establish the foundation for this study. The study included 298 seventh grade PE students randomly selected to three different instructional groups. The six research questions determined if an effect occurred between instruction using attentional cueing and the relative change in performance on two fitness assessments. The relative change in performance was measured by comparing pre-test repetitions to post-test repetitions, resulting the categories improved, worsened, or stayed the same. The results of the chi-square tests showed that there was a statistically significant effect of external attentional cue on lower proportion of curl-up performance (chi2 (2) = 7.358, p <.05) and that there was a statistically significant effect of internal attentional cueing on higher proportion of push-up performance (chi2 (2) = 6.088, p <.05). Results suggest verbal instruction including attentional focus cues can be used to increase motor performance in children.
