This study aimed to evaluate how each member of a romantic couple understands, explains, and experiences mutual affect regulation by examining the mechanisms of emotional regulation in an intimate dyad and learn how these processes influence the relationship. The sample size consisted of ten heterosexual couples. All participants engaged in a semi-structured interview and completed a demographic form and The Experiences in Close Relationships--Revised (ECR-R) (Fraley, Waller, & Brennan, 2000). The qualitative method captured how participants process emotional transactions during the experience of attunement and misattunement within their relationship. The Experiences in Close Relationships--Revised (ECR-R) was used to evaluate individuals' differences related to attachment-related anxiety and avoidance within a close intimate relationship. All data was incorporated in the interpretation of the results to determine how effective attachment communications between the two aid or hinder the relationship.

The most common description from participants regarding experiencing and providing emotional support was through the use of active listening. Yet, some participants were oblivious as to how they emotionally supported their partner. Consistent with past research, a partner's full attention and proximity were two main mechanisms by which an individual felt attuned to their partner. The absence of these marked when couples felt disconnected, which led to feelings of sadness, disappointment, frustration, anxiety, and fear. When an individual was aware of their lack of support, common emotions experienced during that time were guilt and sadness.

The ways in which couples described problems and successes with mutual affect regulation emerged during the interview. The couples' interactions resembled how they experienced attunements and misattunements within their relationship, which reflected regulatory and dysregulatory strategies of emotions. Also consistent with past research, support and proximity seeking were positive affect regulation strategies observed, and hostility, dismissiveness, withdrawal, and overbearing behaviors were all negative emotional strategies. Additionally, some participants referenced the length of their relationship as a contributing factor to how they emotionally connected and disconnected.
