Previous research has identified three classes of Spanish psych verbs: Class I--subject experiencer (temer 'to fear'), Class II--accusative object experiencer (molestar 'to bother'), Class III--dative object experiencer (gustar 'to like') (Parodi-Lewin, 1991). The current research examines Class II (molestar) and Class III (gustar ) verbs and demonstrates that observed differences in their syntactic behavior are theoretically motivated by semantic featural differences. Crucially, this analysis identifies the lexical semantic features that license particular syntactic forms which result in differences in syntactic behavior among verbs across and within the previously established verb classes.

520 $a At the same time, this research investigates the adult second language (L2) acquisition of these verbs from a feature-based perspective, examining the data in light of the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis (Lardiere, 2008, 2009). This hypothesis claims that the reassembly of features is central to successful L2 acquisition of syntax and this reassembly depends largely on the acquisition of morphological competence. In the current research, morphological competence is understood as knowledge of i) the features and feature settings associated with each verb and ii) which syntactic forms are licensed by these feature settings.
520 $a Four groups of L1 English/L2 Spanish learners (n = 66) and a group of native Spanish speakers (n = 19) completed five experimental tasks (four judgment tasks and a preference task), which tested a series of syntactic forms predicted to be licensed by specific formal semantic features and were designed to measure underlying mental representations of the 18 verbs (12 Class II and 6 Class III) under investigation. The results of the NSs are consistent with predicted patterns of grammaticality and support the feature-based analysis presented here which assumes that verbs are lexically encoded with formal semantic representations that are syntactically relevant. The results of the L2 learners suggest that highly advanced L2 learners are sensitive to predicted patterns of grammaticality, but may not have successfully acquired the full underlying semantic representation of Class II verbs due to the inherent feature setting optionality associated with these verbs in the case of [+/--change of state].
