National, State and County legislators, both because of taxpayer impetus and as a result of shifts in ideological paradigms, are seeking acceleration in remediation programs, including E.S.L. However, the reduction in the number of course hours may leave students ill-equipped for regular college courses. The traditional three-step communicative method of instruction, involving presentation, practice, and production, might be inadequate for accelerated second-language learning. In addition, standard ESL grammar texts, which have changed little in three decades, could require revamping. The combination of Grammar without the Teacher, a new specially-designed single-level online self-paced text and the Flipped Classroom method of instruction constitute a possible solution to the imperative of curtailing ESL class-time while providing students with learning modules to customize knowledge and fill in lacunae and areas of improvement without requiring additional classroom instruction.
