Im Zentrum des Buches steht die Ausarbeitung einer Legitimationstheorie der Organisation. Dazu werden zwei Theorieansätze verknüpft und weiterentwickelt: die wissenssoziologische Institutionentheorie und der organisationssoziologische Neo-Institutionalismus. Am Beispiel des Zweiten Bildungswegs wird mit dieser Theorieperspektive die wissenschaftliche Debatte als ein Fundus legitimatorisch nutzbarer Deutungsangebote analysiert. Solche ‚Legitimationsmythen‘ für Bildungsorganisationen verändern sich im Verlauf der Jahrzehnte und stellen somit trotz des gesellschaftlichen Wandels immer zeitgemäße Legitimationsangebote dar.
