Sterben und Tod -- Zur Geschichte von Sterben und Tod -- Trauer und Gedenken -- Bestattungs- und Friedhofskultur.
Sterben, Tod und die Bewältigung der Trauer werden vordergründig als vom Menschen unbeeinflussbare Ereignisse bzw. als Ausdruck individuellen Verhaltens gesehen. Im Grunde sind die dabei entstandenen Richtungen und Formen aber Kultur, also gesellschaftlich bedingt. Geblieben ist dem Tod die Ambivalenz. So gelang es in modernen Gesellschaften ihn erfolgreich zu bekämpfen, d.h. hinauszuschieben. Andererseits gibt es noch immer die absichtsvolle, politisch legitimierte Tötung. Gegenwärtig wird ein tiefer Umbruch in der Trauer- und Bestattungskultur beobachtet. Neben einer voranschreitenden Professionalisierung, Entsakralisierung und Anonymisierung entstehen vielfältige individuelle und milieuspezifische Formen. Diese soziologische Einführung stellt den Wandel in den Zusammenhang gesamtgesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen.
