“Angélica de Sena and Adrian Scribano have written a rich and informative collection. We strongly recommend the book to all researchers and students approaching the fields of social policy, emotions and global inequality.” —Virpi Timonen & Luciana Lolich, School of Social Work & Social Policy, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland “The book is a bold intellectual endeavor that demonstrates a strong balance between deep sociological criticism and a remarkable sense of conceptual rigor.” —Rogério de Souza Medeiros, Professor of Sociology, Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil “This text provides a thought-provoking and critical analysis of the relations between the State, public policies and social policies. Our sociohistorical context makes a text like this that accounts for the connections between bodies, sensibilities, social policies and emotions not only needed, but urgent.” —Begonya Enguix Grau, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Open University of Catalonia, Spain This book analyzes the connections between social policies and politics of sensibilities. The authors show how social policies build sociabilities, experiences and sensibilities, producing processes of conflict avoidance and consecration of the given. After discussing violence against women as a case study in order to understand the current state of social policies, the authors then describe how the “place” and “value” of education have become central features to social policies in order to disband conflict. Finally, they explain the emergence of a social phenomenon in the last sixteen years in Latin America and particularly Argentina: the compensatory consumption system and the resulting emergence of the “assisted citizen.” Angélica De Sena is Researcher at Research Institute Gino Germani, Social Sciences Faculty, University of Buenos Aires, as well as at the Social Observatory, National University of La Matanza (UNLAM), Argentina. Adrian Scribano is Principal Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) at Research Institute Gino Germani, Social Sciences Faculty, University of Buenos Aires, and Director of the Centre for Sociological Research and Studies (CIES), Argentina.
