The use of dynamic supplemental lighting models in greenhouse crop production has become an increasing necessity for growers globally. As the demand for food grows globally, growers have been forced to adapt to an increase in demand for their products. The installation of supplemental lighting systems helps growers increase yield, in spite of potentially unfavorable climatological conditions. Of these lighting systems, the use of high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are most common among growers, but recent technological improvements in more energy efficient light emitting diode (LED) technology has led to a debate about the economic efficacy of HPS systems. This paper will delve into the long term economic advantages of LED supplemental lighting systems for growers across the continental United States, to illustrate the merits of these systems compared to both a non-installation option, and an option to install traditional HPS supplemental lighting systems.
