Fungi, among other microorganisms, are an important part of plant growth. Agricultural companies often market fertilizers as having additional additives that are beneficial to the plant, increasing size and yield. Trichoderma is one such fungus. In this project, the effects of Trichoderma harzianum T-22 Rifai are tested on the growth of soybean plants. Seeds were inoculated with Trichoderma or without the fungi as the controls. Measurement of plant characteristics were obtained from a field trial, in which plant dry weight, seed pod number and weight, plant node number, and plant seed number were recorded, with dry weight and node number yielding a statistically significant difference. For the lab experiment, seeds were inoculated with Trichoderma or without the fungi as the controls. Plants were grown in a controlled growth chamber so that various aspects of their growth could be monitored and measured, including temperature, elimination of stressors, and water availability. The expression of 34 genes targeting growth promotion, stressors, cell division, and other commonly associated aspects of plant development was examined using real-time polymerase chain reaction. Five genes were significantly different between the Trichoderma-treated soybeans and the control group. The genes that were significantly different were gibberellin 3-beta dioxygenase, heat shock protein 70, cytokinin riboside 5'-monophosphate phosphoribohydrolase, acidic chitinase, and the gene encoding nonexpressor of pathogenesis-related genes 1. The expression differences in these genes illustrate a need for further testing of Trichoderma in conjunction with different environmental stresses to elucidate the complex mechanism of various defense pathways that exist in soybean plants.
