The study examines the association between the level of engagement in leisure activities and experienced positive and negative emotions and symptoms of depression in older adults ages 64-100. The study focuses on comparing the prevalence of depression and positive emotions in older adults who engage in active activities as well as passive activities, including listening to music and watching television. The sample consists of a total of 65 participants who were all given a forced choice demographic sheet to report background information as well as three self-reported measures: a modified version of the Pittsburgh Enjoyable Activities Test, the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Results indicate a positive association between older adults who engage in high levels of active activities and frequencies of experiencing positive emotions. No significant relationship is found between older adults who engage in high levels of passive activities and frequencies of experiencing positive emotions. No association is found between frequencies of listening to music and experienced positive emotions. No statistically significant association is found between levels of engagement with active activities and experiences with depression. A statistically significant association is found between levels of engagement in socially active activities and frequencies of experiencing positive emotions; however, no association is found with socially active activities and reported experiences of depression. Finally, no significant association is found between levels of engagement in watching television and frequencies of experienced negative emotions or depressive symptoms.
