Als interdisziplinäres und praxisorientiertes Forschungsfeld prägt die Medical Humanities das Bestreben, den negativen Auswirkungen einer technisierten und rein evidenzbasierten Medizin entgegenzuwirken. Hierzu das Erkenntnispotenzial von Literatur zu nutzen, macht aus Ärzt*innen eine spezifische Gruppe von Leser*innen, die sich von jenen Rezeptionsinstanzen unterscheidet, welche die Literaturwissenschaft routinemäßig untersucht – denn das Ziel ihres Leseaktes ist die Erweiterung medizinprofessioneller, also außerliterarischer, Kompetenzen. Das probabilistische Lesermodell MPL bringt diese angestrebte Verbesserung ärztlicher Kompetenzen systematisch mit der Lektüre literarischer Texte in der Ausbildung zusammen und versteht sich außerdem als ein Beitrag zur Erschließung dieses aufstrebenden, aber schwer zu überblickenden Feldes. Die Autorin Katharina Edtstadler schloss im April 2020 erfolgreich das Doktoratsstudium der Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Wien ab (Dr. phil.). Das Verhältnis von Literaturwissenschaft und Natur- bzw. Humanwissenschaften (vor allem Medical Humanities, Narrative Medicine, Narrative Medical Ethics, Interdisciplinary Storytelling) steht im Zentrum ihrer akademischen Forschung und führte sie auch an die Medizinische Universität Wien. Darüber hinaus beschäftigt sie sich mit neuen Ansätzen in der komparatistischen Imagologie. Sie arbeitet derzeit bei einem medizinischen Fachverlag in Wien.
