Die Autoren behandeln die Anwendung numerischer Methoden wie finite Differenzen, finite Elemente, Randelemente, Ersatzladungsmethoden und Monte-Carlo-Methoden auf feldtheoretische Probleme. Sie geben Ausblicke auf grundlegende Fragen der Physik bis hin zur Quantenmechanik. Ein Anhang widmet sich der speziellen Relativitätstheorie, mit deren Hilfe sich zahlreiche Probleme der elektromagnetischen Feldtheorie leichter lösen lassen, ein weiterer der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie, die schon heute technische Bedeutung erlangt hat. In der 9. Auflage wurde ein Kapitel über die Formulierung der Elektrodynamik mit Differentialformen hinzugefügt. Günther Lehner (1931–2021) studierte theoretische Physik an der Universität München. Dann arbeitete er von 1957–1972 an Problemen der thermonuklearen Fusion und Magnetohydrodynamik (TH München, Institut für Plasmaphysik, später Max-Planck-Institut, in Garching, Laboratorio Gas Ionizzati in Frascati bei Rom). 1972 an die Universität Stuttgart berufen leitete er dort das Institut für Theorie der Elektrotechnik bis 1996. Professor Dr.-Ing. Stefan Kurz studierte Elektrotechnik an der Universität Stuttgart. Er absolvierte 1998–2014 verschiedene berufliche Stationen bei der Robert Bosch GmbH und im akademischen Bereich, unter anderem als Professor für Theoretische Elektrotechnik und numerische Feldberechnung an der Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg und als „Finland Distinguished Professor“ an der TU Tampere. Heute ist er als Senior Chief Expert am Bosch Center for Artificial Intelligence und als Professor für Mathematische Modellierung Elektromagnetischer Felder an der TU Darmstadt tätig.
