The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) was mandated under the 1995 Coleman v. Wilson (now vs. Newsom) court order to provide inmates in state prisons access to adequate Mental Health care (Coleman v. Wilson, 1995). CDCR uses a variety of therapeutic interventions to achieve identified mental health treatment goals with one of those interventions being Recreation Therapy. The problem is that although CDCR employs Recreation Therapists there is no formalized Recreation Therapy Program Guide that provides expectations and program guidelines for practice. Literature review about prison Mental Health in California State prisons, Recreation Therapy in prison, the five Recreation Therapy health domains, Practical applications through Recreation Therapy interventions, and Expert recommendations and best practices provides the theoretical framework and a strong foundation for the creation of a formalized Correctional Recreation Therapy Program Guide.
