As computing devices have developed smaller and cheaper, and are more readily adopted by both industry and consumers, small form-factor and battery-powered computing platforms have become a large growth sector for the technology industry. Any computing device that is not constantly attached to a stable source of power must take great effort to maximize whatever battery reserve power is attached to it. And as most modern computing devices require some form of wireless networking capability, the power draw of broadcasting equipment are no exception to this concern.Networks must maintain the ability to discover where an intended recipient of data is located, and what is the best way to route data to that recipient. Ad hoc On- Demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing is a well-developed means of routing from a source to destination along a wireless network. However, its original implementation did not account for the power consumed when transmitting data, and thus do not result in energy conserving routing algorithms. Amendments to AODV such as Energy Aware AODV (EA-AODV) have shown improvements in routing algorithms that acknowledge energy conservation’s importance but leave room for improvement. This thesis proposes a routing algorithm that improves energy consumption in routing along a wireless network by balancing energy usage throughout the network while maintaining high quality of service for the data being transmitted.
